In case you missed it, it was Madonna’s 60th birthday last week, and in true Madonna style, she celebrated by creating a storm on Instagram. Although to be fair to her, I don’t think she wanted it.
The singer threw a big party in Marrakech and, for the occasion, she donned a hot pink Gucci dress, which she accessorized with a traditional headdress, jewelry and a coin belt. She posted another close-up photo on Instagram, in tribute to Berber (or Amazigh, an ethnic group from North Africa) culture.
Sadly, while Madonna could have said it as a compliment, she was quickly accused of cultural appropriation in the comments.
One user commented, âMadonna is here. I don’t know how she celebrates “Berber culture” (the natives of Morocco are called Amazighs) by playing dress up and shutting herself up in one of the most expensive boutique hotels in Marrakech that no “Berber” can’t afford to celebrate, but OK. ‘
Another added: “So Madonna is posing as a ‘Berber queen’? the lack of respect’
Of course, Madonna has never shied away from causing controversy with her outfit choices, and she has said before that she enjoys being inspired by different cultures.
