Mary G. Poston Smith | Obituary

MARY G. POSTON SMITH, On Tuesday, September 1, 2020, Mary G. Poston Smith, 87, of Charleston, WV joined her Lord and Savior after a short illness.

She was born on October 28, 1932 in Charleston, WV, to Delphia B. Anderson. She was a staunch member of the Starcher Baptist Church in North Charleston.

She was a waitress by trade, working in several restaurants throughout her life. She also volunteered as a “grandmother” at Grandview Elementary School for many years. Mary served several classes always making sure that each child had gifts and treats for each party. In her church, she was known as the “MawMaw” nursery, also providing gifts and hugs to these children. Mary volunteered at The Good Samaritan store at St. Mark’s Church.

Mary enjoyed social gatherings with her family (especially Christmas holidays), a glass of cold sweet tea, and most of all, her children and grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her 20-year-old ex-husband Arl W. Poston, her husband Bill Smith until his death in 1996, her infant daughter Mary Ann Poston, her mother, Delphia Anderson, her brothers Larry and Sonny Anderson and his great-granddaughter. Morgan Ballengee.

He remains to be cherished in his memory his children, Vickie Kennedy (Robert), Cathy Poston Bennett (Okley), William Poston and Douglas Poston (Amy), the brothers Everett, Mike and Edward Anderson, four nieces, one nephew, ten grandchildren , 16 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitations will be held at the Starcher Baptist Church in North Charleston on Friday, September 4 from noon to 1 p.m. The service will begin immediately after being presided over by Pastor Dave Workman and will end with a funeral service at Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston. Food and refreshments will follow at the Gorman Shelter in Coonskin Park.

The mask is compulsory and social distances are to be expected.
