Eclectic music venue Joe’s Pub in New York City has announced the full lineup of Habibi Festival artists for its second annual edition, which will take place over five nights, October 11-15, 2022.
In October, the Habibi Festival will feature music from Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Palestine, Lebanon, and more.
“This year’s artists all bring new life and context to age-old ceremonial traditions, whether it’s HAT using samples of traditional musicians in her DJ set, or Noura Mint Seymali bringing psychedelic rock to tradition. griots.“, said the co-founder of the Yacine Boulares festival.
Noura Mint Seymali, great representative of the tradition of Mauritanian Moorish griots and daughter-in-law of the legendary Dimi Mint Abba, will open the festival alongside Algerian dancer Esraa Warda who returns to the Habibi Festival with her collaborator, Khadija El Warzazia, music innovator Moroccan and one of the first women to publicly perform Gnawa music, a tradition historically dominated by men.
With its all-female vocal and percussion ensemble, Bnat El Houariyat, El Warzazia will add its Marrakesh flavor to both the Huara music of southwestern Morocco, primarily reserved for women-only gatherings, and Chaabi, the music “ popular” beloved of the country.
“Kicking off the festival with a double-header from Noura Mint Seymali and Bnat El Houariyat with Esraa Warda will send shockwaves through New York – these two powerful ensembles take traditional music to ecstatic new heights. We’re thrilled that New York audiences are omnivorous with their musical tastes and hope they enjoy finding connections with and across the spectrum of early to contemporary music in this year’s lineup.says Habibi Festival producer Meera Dugal.
Showcasing the local diaspora community in New York is also essential for the festival. The opening of Bnat El Houariyat’s set on October 12 is provided by Iraqi singer Zahra Alzubaidi, based in New York, who defends the musical styles of the south of the country as well as the Iraqi maqam.
Joining Bnat El Houariyat in their US premiere is Night in Tunisia, a project by Yacine Boulares that brings together a supergroup of artists from all of Tunisia’s geographic and musical traditions.
The young Palestinian qanun player, Firas Zreik, who took care of the classical music side of the festival at a young age, became the first soloist and qanun player of the Arab National Orchestra.
The likes of the region’s underground music scene come from Lebanese-Syrian duo Bedouin Burger who combine Levantine electronic rhythms with Arabic poetry and Hatim Belyamani aka HAT, a Moroccan electronic artist and founder of Remix ⟷ Culture who remixes traditional music and video from all over the world in an audio-visual journey covering everything from Amazigh folk songs to Afro-indigenous Brazilian processional music.
Additionally, each performance will be accompanied by a conversation with the artist in collaboration with Afikra, a global organization that aims to promote understanding of the diversity and richness of the cultures and histories of the Arab world.
Dugal said:Whether you are from these cultures or not, you can feel the history in the music, it is a visceral experience. When it’s hard to find footing in an ever-changing world, it’s grounded and humbling to experience a sound that’s been in the making for hundreds of years. It’s also beautiful to see artists bring a playful twist to their torchbearer status – it reminds us that we are part of a long continuum of creativity and beauty that extends far beyond this moment..”
Habibi Festival was co-founded and organized by musician Yacine Boulares, producer Meera Dugal and Joe’s Pub manager Alex Knowlton.
