A major winter storm could dump 6 to 10 inches of snow in New York, Virginia and Boston

The Northeast will be hit by a major snowstorm this week that could bring between six and 10 inches of snow from Virginia to New York and could last long enough for a White Christmas.

A major northeast will cross the mid-Atlantic to the northeast starting Wednesday, bringing with it heavy snowfall, high winds and coastal flooding.

Experts predict the storm will sprinkle snow and cold temperatures in New York, Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia, according to Weather.com.

Six to 10 inches of snow are expected in Virginia, New York, Boston and possibly southern New England.

In Washington, Baltimore and the eastern suburbs of Philadelphia, mild ocean air can turn snow into ice and rain.

The NWS says snow could reach or exceed a foot across New York State, especially on its northern and western edges.

Parts of the Poconos and Catskills could get an inch or two of snow before the storm subsides Thursday.

According to the Washington Post, at least six inches of snow are expected to fall in eastern Massachusetts as well as Connecticut and Rhode Island.
